Red Color Theory

How to use Color Psychology to Create an Emotionally Healthy Home

Anna Sotnik

“Good design means choosing the right colors to go with your existing furnishing, and not buying everything new and throwing out all your applies possession.”

– “Does red color make you hungry and impulsive?”
– “Does woman in red attracts your attention?”
The answer is — “Yes”! According to the various researches red color has the effects of increasing alertness,
attracting attention and brain stimulation. According to a study investigating the effect of multi-colored lights on physiology, red waves do not only stimulate heart, circulatory system and suprarenal glands but also increase stamina and life force (Zelanski, Fisher, 2003)

“Red stimulate everything, including appetite, so try to avoid this color in the living and dining rooms, unless you want to eat more.”

Have you ever noticed that almost every major food chain uses red color in their logo and design to make you hungry and impulsive?

Red color, probably, will make you eat more, but by using the knowledge about this color you can make the interior space work in harmony with this color rather than fight it.

Like a lot of psychological studies, the question of whether the color red makes people want to eat more is hard to answer with a simple yes or no.
It has been tested that red table cloths will actually make a person eat more but other studies found that people eat less snacks from plates that are red.

What it really comes down to is that it’s all about our personal associations with the color experiences. Over the years we used to see red logos on the road sides and in the shopping malls as a sign of a fast food, and that’s the main reason why most of us associate red color mostly with speed and food.

The primary focus for many fast food chains isn’t on being a comfortable place, but rather a place where you can eat and go quickly after getting your food. That’s another example of our association with red color experience. We learned associate red color with speed and quickness, for this reason, large amounts of this color are not typically desirable for spaces where people gather and stay for long periods of time – such as family room.

Studies in Minnesota State University (2003) have found that people in the red room had higher stress rating scores compared to green or white rooms.

It is obvious that if you have stressfull, intense life you should avoid using red color in your interior design. Exposure to this color has been proven to increase depression, feelings of tension, anxiety and stress scale.

Red makes a person feel confident and powerful and has been linked with passion and love since time began.

Red is daring, energetic and impulsive, it represents sexuality, romance, courage, danger and action. Red is a color of Christmas, Valentine’s Day, fertility and good fortune.

Our prehistoric ancestors saw red as the color of fire and blood – energy and primal life forces.

Red color is a highly visible color which is one of the reasons why fire trucks and ambulances are usually painted red. Flashing red lights mean danger or emergency, red signs on the road alert drivers about danger, intersections or calling for caution.

Red colored objects in your interior will take all attention from other objects in your space. You can use this trick if you want to hide some old or unfixed furniture in your room.

If you want your kids to have positive memories from their childhood try to avoid using red color in their rooms. Psychological studies suggest that red color strongly increased memory for negative words and actions. Choose blue, pink and green colors instead to collect as many positive memories as possible.

In his research Goldstein (1964) found that red’s expansive effects on motor perception correlated with an aroused or excited mood state. Exposure to red color increase heart rate and blood pressure, that’s the reason why this color may be recommended for master bedroom, but again, not as a wall color.

In this case it is important to clarify that this is a choice between sex life and the quality of sleep. You can combine a small red lamp for more activity and turn it off when you want to rest.

If you’re the type of person that loves an intense workout, or need more motivation and drive in your live, make sure you fill your workout room or office space with red tones!

“Red is an amazing color but use it carefully in your interior design!”
