Yellow Color Theory

How to use Color Psychology to Create an Emotionally Healthy Home

Anna Sotnik

Yellow, the color of sunshine, joy, warmth, happiness and hope. Yellow can catch the sunlight and leave you with an uplifting feeling of youth and liveliness. Yellow’s mood improving qualities could be assumed to help seasonal affective disorder during fall and winter.

Yellow symbolizes a whole cadre of conflicting meanings and messages. While generally accepted as the “happiest” color in the spectrum, yellow has also been associated with several negative connotations. For instance, in 10th century France, the doors of criminals and traitors were painted yellow, in Greece, yellow is associated with sadness, yellow flowers in Europe symbolize separation.
But still, we all love yellow, this color always makes us happier and positive. The use of yellow to cheer people up can be traced back to nineteenth century, it was used in the hospitals to cure soldiers who were shell-shocked, yellow ribbons were worn as a sign of hope as women waited for their men to come home from war. Today, yellow ribbons are still used to welcome homes loved ones.

Yellow – is the most visible color and is the first color the human eye notices.

  • Yellow Jackets, waistcoats and helmets are worn for better visibility, especially for roadworks or on building sites.
  • Yellow-black barricade tape serves as caution or potential hazard.
  • Yellow lines separate traffic travelling in opposite directions.
  • Yellow-black markings are also painted on the objects themselves as warnings.

Yellow is the most visible color as well as the most dangerous, if you combine it with black or brown. Even in nature, animals that have venom, spines or are toxic use this combination as a warning color. That’s the reason why scillful interior designers will never reccomend this combo for any living space.

This color triggers the analytical side of our brain but it loses touch with our creative side.  It is a color that inspires thought and logical thinking and helps us find new ways of doing things.

Yellow also helps us focus, study and remember information.

Yellow color is recommended for kitchen, dining room and home office, but yellow color design is not recommended for bedrooms.
